Coronavirus: U.K. Unveils 14-Day Quarantine Plans

SAGE member pours cold water on government plans to quarantine people coming to UK

Britain will introduce a COVID-19 quarantine for all travellers arriving from overseas from June 8, interior minister Priti Patel said on Friday, a measure that airlines have warned will devastate their industry.

What happens if I don't self-isolate?

Most travellers will be expected to fill out the form in advance but facilities will be provided at the border for those who have been unable to do so.

Speaking to fellow Conservative MP Matt Vickers, Ms Patel said she was in touch with her French counterpart every week and that they were deploying "substantial" law enforcement. Failure to do so is punishable by a £100 fine.

How do I get home?

They will be told to avoid public transport and travel to their accommodation by vehicle "where possible", and not to go out to buy food or other essentials "where they can rely on others". The Home Office said this will be at a hotel. They may also leave it in "an emergency", a spokeswoman added.

Breaches carry a?1,000 ($1,220, 1,120 euro) fine in England or prosecution with an unlimited fine.

"So anyone breaking their 14-day quarantine could face a penalty of £1,000, and that will be a fixed penalty notice". The Devolved Administrations will set out their own enforcement approaches.

One travel agent said he is likely to shut shop for good.

Public Health England officials backed up by private contractors will check if people abide by the self-isolation, initially by phoning them and asking a series of questions.

Coronavirus cases cross 5 million globally; 'biggest one-day spike'
The world saw the highest daily spike in coronavirus cases on Wednesday since the start of the pandemic, the BBC reported. The country of about 6 million has recorded 1,024 cases and 26 deaths, according to the Health Ministry.

If there is concern they are not complying, they could be reported to the police.

The reason given for the measure is that as the transmission rate in the UK falls and the number of travellers arriving in the UK begins to increase in the coming months, imported cases may pose a larger threat as they could become a higher proportion of the overall number of infections in the UK and so increase the spread of the disease.

Who is exempt from the rules?

Anyone moving from within the common travel area, covering Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.

France says it may quarantine people arriving from an area "where the virus is circulating", but it has not published a list of targeted areas.

At this stage elite athletes will not be included but the Government is continuing to review what can be done for sport events.

He said: "As more details emerge on government plans to quarantine people flying into the United Kingdom, it adds even more pressure to the already struggling airline and holiday industry".

How long will the measures be in place?

"As we are able to gather more data and have better surveillance of a rate of infection in different parts of the country then we will be able to lift measures quicker in some parts of the country than in others", the prime minister's official spokesman was quoted as saying.
