Apple Releases iOS 13.5, iPadOS 13.5, and tvOS 13.4.5

Unlocking an Apple device with Face ID support while wearing a mask has become easier

Apple just launched its all-important iOS 13.5 update for the iPhone, and its features are so relevant to our times that we strongly suggest downloading it right away.

The new version of iOS also features an update to Face ID.

Apps that use the ‌Exposure Notification‌ API will allow you to receive notifications should you come into contact with someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19 and wants to share that information.

Anyone with an iPhone 6s or later can install iOS 13.5 for free; likewise, anyone with an iPad Air 2 or iPad mini 4 or later can get iPadOS 13.5. Here's how to update iOS on an iPhone, and how to update iPadOS on an iPad. Our technology is created to make these apps work better. The notes also detail the contact tracing apps framework or "Exposure Notification API".

Apple Update Alerts When Someone With Covid-19 Is Near

In addition to being contacted anonymously, the Exposure Notifications API uses Bluetooth Low Energy, not WiFi or other, more potentially identifiable means.

Apple is including an Exposure Logging toggle under Settings that will let you opt-out of participating in COVID-19 Exposure Notifications if a health app is installed. If a person has tested positive for Covid-19, their iPhone can share a list of everyone they've been in contact with to the cloud. To ensure user privacy, Apple and Google state that temporary exposure keys are generated randomly instead of being derived from a tracing key. This small but crucial enhancement can significantly help ease the ordeal for users, who are now stuck at either needing to remove their masks in order to unlock their iPhones, or wait for repeated failed face recognition attempts to register, before the passcode field turns up automatically.

Apple has updated Group FaceTime with a new toggle that disables automatic enlarging of the tile belonging to the person who is speaking. This also works when the user is authenticating with the App Store, Apple Books, Apple Pay, iTunes and other apps which support signing in with Face ID.
