COVID-19: Premier League players being treated like ‘guinea pigs’ - Danny Rose

Steve Bruce is confident he is the man to lead Newcastle onto the next level

Premier League clubs have been returning to training since Monday after the United Kingdom government gave them the green light to restart the season behind closed doors next month.

Newcastle last played on March 7 and Bruce believes his players will not be fit to return until the end of June. earlier reported that Premier League was dealt a blow on Tuesday, May 19, after six positive coronavirus cases were recorded among three clubs.

If a player came to me, or a member of staff, and had their reservations, then you have to respect them'.

"We need a good stretch of time here to get them ready", Bruce told the Sunday Telegraph.

Newcastle supporters have reacted on Twitter to their former striker's Tweet and many have lambasted Chopra for his disrespectful lack of support for a manager that remains in the Toon job. "We should be setting out our case and ending this now needless delay".

"You do get labelled in the game but I'd back myself, of course I would", he said.

Germany's Bundesliga became the first of Europe's top five leagues to return on Saturday with a series of measures including regular testing, disinfected balls and substitutes wearing masks to protect players.

To be in a position where you're actually challenging would be wonderful. I'd back myself of course I would. Newcastle manager Steve Bruce

"Certainly, the measures being put in place, you're probably more at risk going to the supermarket or putting petrol in your auto", he added.

"We are in a fortunate position, we can get tested every three days". I hope it's where it goes, but in the meantime I'll just crack on, wait, roll my sleeves up and get on with trying to get some results to try and get the club going forward.

Manchester City's Raheem Sterling is one of a number of high-profile players to have expressed concerns over the risks players could face on their return to contact training and games. And if you can do that, I'd back myself to have a crack at it.

Bruce has also been reflecting on the club's return to training this week, admitting that he, his coaching staff and the players "couldn't be more safe" with the club sticking strictly to the guidelines in place.

According to the defender, a restart of matches could be "potentially" harmful to him, saying he cannot risk his health to entertain people.

"Something that has surprised me is how little our opinions seem to count".

Bruce though has tried to ensure players of the safety measures in force at the club's training ground with the Toon boss claiming that following strict guidelines they 'couldn't be more safe'.

But even with Newcastle set to be back in training on Tuesday, Bruce thinks the end of June would be a more realistic goal.
