Speaking at his regular press briefing from the porch of his home at Rideau Cottage in Ottawa, Trudeau said the 90-minute conference of world leaders covered a wide range of subjects.

Trying to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus has forced governments to order businesses closed and companies to ask employees to work from home. Even if you're still employed, but not receiving income because of this crisis, the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) is there for you.

It allows the government to spend C$107bn ($75bn, £64bn) in emergency aid and economic stimulus to assist Canadians struggling financially.

The Liberal government is repackaging two previously promised benefits for Canadians whose working lives are disrupted by COVID-19. The CERB is available to Canadian workers affected by the current situation whether or not they are eligible for Employment Insurance (EI).

Who qualifies for the new benefit?

The government plans to have an online portal open by April 6.

"The way that we have chose to move forward on this is we are providing a wage subsidy that's going to go directly to employees", Morneau said.

"Canada and the United States have the longest unmilitarised border in the world and it is very much in both of our interests for it to remain that way", Trudeau said.

"It's benefited our two countries, our two economies tremendously".

"Last week, (Canada and the U.S.) managed - working collaboratively together - a very good reciprocal and co-operative agreement on restricting non-essential travel across our shared border", Freeland said.

Wichita Animal Shelter temporarily closes to public, services continue
As for how long the adoption suspension will last, James says the shelters are preparing for at least 14 days. "We've had an unbelievable outpouring of support, so we've got roughly 350 animals out in foster already".

He'll be taking part in an video conference with leaders of the G20, who are expected to talk about co-ordination of global efforts to contain the virus and cushion the devastating blow to the world's economy.

The funds come from the $82-billion financial aid package announced a week ago to help the country weather the COVID-19 pandemic.

Qualtrough says the government opted for the single benefit because the decades-old employment insurance system wasn't created to handle an economic shock where millions of workers wouldn't qualify for assistance.

The state of NY, which shares a border with Canada, has been an epicenter of the USA outbreak.

Trudeau is stressing he need for people to obey a new order requiring anyone returning to Canada from overseas to self-isolate for 14 days. "If you've returned from overseas, you have to go home and stay home", Trudeau said.

"So saying, we have a Parliament that works, we have an Opposition that is doing its job of making sure that we are taking the right steps the right way". You could face a stiff penalty or be sent to prison.

"If we find out that you weren't truthful or that you had income you didn't declare, that will actually be swept up at the back end", Qualtrough said.
