B.C. announces eviction moratorium for renters during COVID-19 crisis

More than 600 Confirmed COVID-19 Cases in BC

Henry reported 42 new B.C. cases of COVID-19 Wednesday and one death, raising the province's total to 14 deaths.

Asked if she has an estimate in mind for how many cases there are in B.C. overall - including those that have not been confirmed through testing - Henry acknowledged that she does, but said it changes regularly and she's hesitant to share it without providing proper context.

She noted that "on the positive side, we now have 183 people who have fully recovered from COVID-19 in BC".

64 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, including 26 in intensive care.

But some of the people who were exposed before the social distancing measures were ordered will develop the disease in the next week to 10 days, Henry said.

"As we work together to fight this pandemic, we can't afford to leave anyone behind", said MLA Chandra Herbert, leader of the Province's Rental Housing Task Force. "It is gradually increasing though and we're watching that very carefully".

LeadNow, a Canadian citizens advocacy group, also applauded Horgan's eviction freeze, but said the government's $500 rental supplement doesn't go far enough.

British Columbia is offering tenants some of the strongest protections in Canada in response to the COVID-19 pandemic by freezing rents, prohibiting evictions except in extreme circumstances, and offering subsidies to those in need.

Very importantly, they will be making regular phone calls to check on and support people who are staying on their own at home. An incredible 405,000 people have signed up for the NHS volunteer responders scheme. "I owe you a debt of thanks", he added.

"It is the maximum, but we know smaller is better", she said.

"This fund is there to help people who are in genuine distress and the fewer people who access the program the more opportunity we have to expand it going forward".

In terms of the other care homes that have been dealing with outbreaks, Henry said there are no new cases at the Lynn Valley Care Centre, but it is where the most recent death has occurred. All of those who have died from COVID-19 have been 70 or older.

Lynn Valley was the first of now nine care homes where the virus has been identified in B.C. On Wednesday, Henry announced the ninth outbreak: A case discovered in a health-care worker at Broadway Pentecostal Lodge in Vancouver.

"This is something that's required to protect people", she said.

"It's a bit of a dance right now", Henry said. "This happened quite quickly".

Health Minister Adrian Dix said the number of cases is expected to rise in the coming weeks and it won't be until later when officials can determine of physical distancing has worked.

Horgan said he doesn't want people to fear losing their homes, which "should be a place of comfort and security".
