Australian Cruise Ship Passengers To Be Quarantined With Quokkas

A passenger of the Ruby Princess who tested positive to COVID-19 has died with authorities now investigating how the ship docked and cleared the border

Australia's confirmed coronavirus cases was at 2,423 yesterday, with eight deaths since the outbreak began.

Hundreds of cruise liner passengers are to be put in coronavirus quarantine on an island residence to among Australia's prettiest marsupials - the cosy quokka.

But the details of their quarantine - including how those people will be fed, where they will be housed and what will happen to the island's 100 permanent residents - are yet to be finalised.

The Artania cruise ship, seized offshore at anchor near Western Australia (WA), reported more COVID-19 cases as seven of the passengers on board have tested positive for the virus as of Wednesday.

All visitors have been ordered off the island to prepare it as a quarantine site.

West Australian Premier Mark McGowan said no one would be permitted to disembark the Artania unless there was a "life-threatening emergency".

"I do not want any action taken further in relation to releasing any passengers off any boat in Sydney until we get a tick off from all authorities moving forward on new protocols", she said in a morning update. Due to their increased popularity, there are several tips to ensure the safeguarding of the quokkas, including to not touch or feed them, and to let them approach you, rather than chasing them.

23 sailors on US Navy aircraft carrier test positive for coronavirus
At that time, the number of cases in the country was low and all were in the northern part of the country away from the port. In all, eight sailors have tested positive for the coronavirus, up from three on Tuesday , Modly said.

The holiday island of Rottnest has been emptied to create a quarantine centre for Australian cruise passengers.

The ship's owner Cruise & Maritime Voyages told The Australian newspaper it had recorded no health concerns among its passengers or crew.

He said: "All crew and foreign nationals will remain on the ship until arrangements are made to fly them directly out of the country".

These rules from the WA government also apply to other ships off the coast of Perth that are looking to dock.

"We also wanted to provide additional context to the CDC's report issued on March 23 regarding COVID-19 testing on cruise ships: Not mentioned in the report is the fact that Princess Cruises volunteered to preserve select staterooms onboard Diamond Princess, known to have been occupied by positive cases", the company said.

"They will not be allowed to disembark at any time, unless it is to travel under strict supervision, directly to the airport, or they need urgent medical attention to survive".

Thousands of passengers left the Ruby Princess, uninformed of a Covid-19 break out aboard.
