United Kingdom to open temporary London hospital to tackle coronavirus outbreak

To fight against coronavirus, more than 158,000 volunteers offer help in UK

The Health Secretary says the risk of coronavirus is "accelerating rapidly" and is appealing for hundreds of thousands of volunteers to support NHS staff across the country - including on the Isle of Wight.

More than 400,000 people have signed up to be volunteers for the NHS in just 24 hours, according to the Prime Minister.

"If you are well and able to do so safely, I would urge you to sign up today to help the most vulnerable people in our communities as an NHS volunteer responder".

At this hard time for frontline doctors and nurses, sign up here to show your support now to our fearless NHS Heroes. Very importantly, they will be making regular phone calls to check on and support people who are staying on their own at home.

The system aims to reach up to 1.5 million people who are "shielding" - keeping themselves at home for 12 weeks under government advice to protect those with serious health conditions.

Meant to relieve pressure on an already strained NHS, the recruitment drive searching for young people over the age of eighteen and of good health exceeded its target this morning, not even 24 hours after it began.

An incredible 405,000 people have signed up for the NHS volunteer responders scheme.

"I owe you a debt of thanks", he added.

Catherine Johnstone, the chief executive of the Royal Voluntary Service, compared the effort to that of the Second World War when a million women joined the organisation, which was then known as the Women's Voluntary Service.

There are so many ways that you can help out at the moment, volunteering doesn't just mean being on the front line.

"We will next week open a new hospital, a temporary hospital, the NHS Nightingale hospital, at the Excel center in London", Hancock said at a news conference.
