U.S. could become 'coronavirus epicenter', UK locks down, Olympics on hold

Margaret Harris, a spokesperson for the World Health Organization, told reporters on Tuesday, the United States of America has the potential to be the next Coronavirus epicenter overtaking Europe amid a large acceleration of cases in the nation.

Reuters reports Harris was asked whether the United States could become the new epicenter and she said: "We are now seeing a very large acceleration in cases in the U.S. So it does have that potential".

Addressing the virus spread in Italy, which is now the worst-hit nation in Europe, Harris said there was a "glimmer of hope" for the country, but it is still too early to speak about the disease subsiding.

NY is the worst affected state according to known cases, with more than 20,000 of the confirmed infections in America coming in the region.

"Ultimately, the goal is to ease the guidelines and open things up to very large sections of our country as we near the end of our historic battle with the invisible enemy", the president said. And 40 percent of those cases were reported in the US.

France is the only other European country with more than 350 deaths on Tuesday, according to WHO.

Officials believe that the published number of those infected largely underestimates the real figure, as only those showing severe symptoms are usually tested.

Bodies On Ice Rink as Spain Sees Record Infections, Deaths
The decision was made following interviews with the Madrid regional government, Spanish military leaders and city hall officials. Still, Harris said the scope of the global outbreak was "enormous" and that cases were expected to increase "considerably".

The coronavirus' death rate - a calculation that divides the number of known deaths divided by the total number of confirmed cases - varies widely by country right now.

According to the data of Johns Hopkins University, there are a total of 46, 450 COVID-19 cases reported in the country as of Tuesday morning.

Despite an unprecedented lockdown imposed on March 14, both deaths and infections have continued to mount, with the Spanish army called in to join efforts to curb its spread. "There are some extremely heartwarming and fantastic stories coming out of the USA about what people are doing for each other".

In a statement, North Atlantic Treaty Organisation said Spain's military had asked for "international assistance", seeking medical supplies to help curb the spread of the virus both in the military and in the civilian population.

President Trump said Tuesday he "would like to have the country opened up and just raring to go by Easter", which is April 12.

"We are now seeing a very large acceleration in cases in the U.S.", said Margaret Harris.

However, when it comes to number of cases, China still accounts for the largest number of cases that are about 81,588 but their infection rate has significantly slowed down due to the stringent implementation of lockdown.
