Violinist plays during brain op as surgeons test her dexterity

Surgeons at King's Hospital in London removed a brain tumour from a female patient while she played the violin

Turner had radiation therapy but later decided on surgery after the tumour had "grown and become aggressive" in 2019.

A violinist helped surgeons avoid damage to her brain during surgery to remove a tumour by playing her instrument, the United Kingdom hospital where she underwent the innovative procedure said.

The musical interlude wasn't meant to serenade the surgeons - the team wanted to ensure that the parts of Turner's brain responsible for fine movement weren't inadvertently damaged during the complicated procedure.

Ashkan explained that the hospital typically will have brain surgery patients perform language tests, but Turner is his first patient to have ever played an instrument during an operation.

King's College Hospital, where it all happened, a consultant neurosurgeon, Professor Keyoumars Ashkan came up with the plan to help reduce the risk.

"We managed to remove over 90% of the tumour, including all the areas suspicious of aggressive activity, while retaining full function in her left hand".

Dagmar Turner performed the act so that surgeons could preserve her ability to play music. "The thought of losing my ability to play was heartbreaking".

China virus death toll surges past 2,000
The victim, a 70-year-old man, is the sixth person to die from the pneumonia-causing virus outside of mainland China. On Tuesday, 236 patients became seriously ill, while 1,824 people were discharged from hospital after recovery.

She played violin while her tumour was removed, while closely monitored by the anaesthetists and a therapist.

The tumor was located in the right frontal lobe, which controls movement in her left hand.

Turner later thanked the team for their work.

The doctor will then remove part of the skull to reach the brain.

'It was all those finer details of the fine control of the left hand, for example somebody playing the violin, the pressure on the string all those fast movements moving between one string to another. This would ensure the surgeons did not damage any crucial areas of the brain that controlled Dagmar's delicate hand movements specifically when playing the instrument.

The patient was released from hospital three days after the surgery.

She was back to regular violin playing within two and a half weeks, and said: "The violin is my passion - I've been playing since I was 10 years old".

A UK-based musician proved that classical music stimulates the mind in more ways than one after playing the violin in the middle of a brain tumor operation, as seen in a new video.
