WHO Officially Names Coronavirus Covid-19

These were the details of the news World Health Organization says coronavirus cases stabilising in China, but outbreak could go any way for this day.

This particular strain originated in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, the largest city in central China, and is in the same family as SARS and MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome).

The new coronavirus infection has killed over 1,100 people and has sickened over 43,000, mostly in mainland China, but Tedros said "we have a realistic chance of stopping the #COVID19 outbreak".

"The name of this new virus contains "SARS Coronavirus" because it's closely related".

The new name is a portmanteau of the words "corona", "virus" and "disease", with 2019 representing the year that it emerged.

Under the guidelines of the WHO, the World Organization for Animal Health, and Food and Agriculture Organization, the name for the disease has to avoid reference to a geographic location, an animal, an individual, or group of people, Tedros said.

Tedros referred to "some concerning instances of onward transmission from people with no travel history to China", citing cases this week in France and Britain.

Topics under discussion included: the current status of COVID-19 from an worldwide and regional perspective, the confirmation of the roles of key entities and clarification of travel restrictions into the country.

The number of newly reported cases from China has stabilised in the past week but that has to be interpreted with extreme caution. At the same time, other agencies are working on the social, economic, and developmental implications of the virus.

Arnold Monto, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Michigan's School of Public Health, says it's important to be sensitive to different cultures when naming a disease. "I can't say. But I think it's at its peak in mid- to late-February", he said. An additional 39 people on board the Diamond Princess have tested positive for COVID-19, raising the total of cases to 174, while thousands of passengers and crew face a second week in quarantine.
