Sony "struggling" to lower $450 PlayStation 5 price, report claims

Sony

According to Bloomberg's sources, Sony opted for unusually expensive cooling systems. However, the PS5 manufacturing cost is thought to be $450, leaving Sony with a hard pricing decision for its next console.

With the PS5 expected to launch before the end of the year, typically pricing is set before the end of February and before mass production starts in late March. However, according to people with knowledge of the matter, Sony is "taking a wait-and-see approach" with the PlayStation 5. That puts Sony in an enormous world of pain, considering the PS4's estimated manufacturing cost was $US381, compared to its original launch price of $US399.

According to the source, Sony already locked down most of the components for the PlayStation 5.

Xbox is calling its next generation the "Series X" and claims it it will be the most powerful console ever released.

"We must keep PlayStation 5's bill of materials under our control and we need to make the correct number of units in the initial production", Sony's Chief Financial Officer Hiroki Totoki said at an earnings briefing earlier this month.

CDC: Coronavirus test kits shipped across U.S. are faulty
This is the first person under quarantine at JBSA-Lackland who had symptoms and tested positive for coronavirus, the agency said. So far, 175 people on the ship have been infected with the virus - the largest single outbreak cluster outside of China.

With those things in mind, we expect that the PS5 cooling system will not only provide more efficient and reliable heat dissipation but will also run much quieter than the current generation of consoles.

For decades, the Nintendo PlayStation prototype was nothing more than a myth.

Outside of PlayStation 5, Bloomberg reports that Sony Interactive Entertainment also plans to release a new version of PlayStation VR sometime after PlayStation 5 goes on sale.

If Sony were to make a profit on each console sold, the cost of the PS5 would be enormous - $699 in Australian terms, or even higher factoring in expenses from shipping and distribution.

Sony executives are voicing patience about the next console's pricing as they anticipate the transition to be a gradual one, said people familiar with its day-to-day operations. Indeed, one report says that Series X's SSD may actually be DRAM-less - a first in this market - which could help Microsoft skirt this supply issue, at least partially. However, Sony is thought to be waiting longer this time on setting a price.
