Senate votes to limit Trump's war powers on Iran, presidential veto expected

Sen. Tim Kaine D-Va. joined at left by Sen. Mike Lee R-Utah meets with reporters just after the Senate advanced a resolution asserting that President Donald Trump must seek approval from Congress before engaging in further military action against Iran

US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) holds a news conference after the final vote on the war powers resolution regarding potential military action against Iran, at the Capitol in Washington, US February 13, 2020.

Eight of Trump's fellow Republicans joined Democrats to pass the war powers resolution by 55-45.

This aims to rebuke the president after the US drone killing last month of Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad.

Trump has told confidants in recent days that he felt both vindicated and strengthened by his acquittal in the Senate, believing Republicans have rallied around him in unprecedented fashion while voters were turned off by the political process, according to four White House officials and Republicans close to the West Wing who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about private conversations.

'I support what the President is doing with our foreign policy, ' Lee said, adding, 'For me, this is about supporting President Trump in his foreign policy, in his effort to make sure that we don't get involved too easily, too quickly, in an unconstitutional way, in any war.

Democrat Senator Tim Kaine, a cosponsor on the bill, argued the resolution is not meant to tie the president's hands, but to force him to "make a case to Congress" and "in front of the American people" before he can take a major military action against another country. The president of the United States - this president and every president - always needs the ability to defend the United States against imminent attack without asking for anybody's permission. Rand Paul (R-Ky.). Despite reaching across the aisle, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has urged Republicans to reject the resolution. The Kentucky lawmaker said it would limit the US military's ability to defend itself against Iranian threats.

The House has signaled it could pass the Senate version of the war powers resolution. "Don't let it happen!" he tweeted.

The Senate resolution differs from one passed by the House with bipartisan support in the wake of the drone strike. Her colleague Tucker Carlson called into question Vindman's allegiance to the USA because he had been offered the position of Ukrainian defense minister.

The New York Times is reporting that White House acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney would leave the room whenever President Donald Trump met with his attorney Rudy Giuliani to discuss the Ukraine scheme. "And so we sent him on his way to a much different location, and the military can handle him anyway they want".

Earlier in the day, Democrats defeated Sen.

Steven Aftergood, who directs the Federation of American Scientists' Project on Government Secrecy, also said that the president has the power to limit access to his conversations. "With Congress's continued leadership, backed by an organized and activated grass roots", she says, "we can be the necessary counterweight to Trump's pro-war foreign policy".

The rebuke was the Senate's first major vote since acquitting Trump on impeachment charges last week.

If senators took their oaths seriously, votes to assert Congress's authority in matters of war and peace would be unanimous.

Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani, who headed the elite Quds Force, died January 3 in an attack near Baghdad's airport to prevent what the administration said was an imminent attack against US interests.
