Medtronic insulin pump recall: 2,100 injuries, 1 death reported

FDA recalls some Medtronic Mini Med insulin pumps

All lots of MiniMed Model 630G from before October 2019 and all lots of MiniMed Model 670G from before August 2019.

According to the FDA, the pumps may have a broken or missing retainer ring, an issue that can cause the over- or under-delivery of insulin.

If the cartridge is not locked firmly into place, patients could receive either too much or too little insulin. Severe hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia can make you pass out or lead to seizure and death.

According to the FDA, one person has died and more than 2,000 others have been injured by the device.

The pumps are used by people with Type 1 diabetes to deliver insulin for management of the disease, the FDA said. Patients should contact Medtronic to obtain a replacement pump and follow their doctor's recommendations and perform manual insulin injections.

Medtronic is advising customers to examine the retainer ring of their pump.

Flu death total up to 46
All but two of the cases were in people who had traveled to Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the global outbreak. In total, there have been 78 pediatric deaths so far this season, with 10 new deaths reported last week.

Customers who have questions about this recall should call the 24-hour Medtronic Technical Support at 877-585-0166.

Continue using the pump if the reservoir locks in place correctly.

Check the pump retainer ring and verify that the reservoir is locked correctly at every set change.

Check the pump and retaining ring if the pump falls by accident, and stop using it if it is damaged.

More than 300,000 devices are included in the recall. "We appreciate your time and attention in reading this important notification", MedTronic wrote in the November safety notification.
