Chitetsu Watanabe, who was born on March 5, 1907, pumped his fist as he was handed a certificate by a Guinness World Records official at the nursing home in Joetsu, Niigata Prefecture, where he resides. In 1974, he and his son built a new family home, and grew vegetables and fruit there until Watanabe was 104.

Japan's 112-year-old Chitetsu Watanabe has been crowned the world's oldest male.

He was born on 5 March, 1907 in the town where he now lives as the first of eight children of his father Haruzo and mother Miya.

After graduating from agricultural school he moved to Taiwan and worked on sugar cane plantation contracts and lived there for 18 years with his wife Mitsue and their children.

"Both Chitetsu and Tetsuo told me that getting to places and sourcing food was a struggle", Yoko Watanaba, the wife of Chitetsu's son Testsuo said. She lived to 122 years and 164 days before dying in August 1997. "Having to live under that circumstance with four young children must have been tough". He also presented his work at local exhibitions until 2007.

He admitted a penchant for candies such as custard pudding - but it appears to have done him no harm.

Rise in new coronavirus cases in China reflects 'broader definition' of infection
Other cities in Hubei sealed off neighbourhoods like Wuhan this week, with some citing "war-time" management to contain the virus. Many patients reportedly have tested negative even while showing clear symptoms of the virus, such as fever and pneumonia.

Watanabe, who is married with five children, said the secret to longevity is to "not get angry and keep a smile on your face". He's also caring. When I was working on my patchwork hobby, he was the one who praised my work the most.

"Congratulations to Japan's Chitetsu Watanabe who has been confirmed as the world's oldest man living at 112 years old", Guinness tweeted.

The world's previous oldest living man Masazo Nonaka died in January a year ago aged 113.

As of 2019, he was still actively doing exercises to freshen his body but he is now at a rest home.

Until last summer his daily activities including exercising, origami, calligraphy and maths.
