US health official hopeful some evacuees may be released from quarantine today

The patient is among a group that was under a federal quarantine order after returning on a State Department-chartered flight that arrived at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar on February 7, the CDC said. The hospital released her at the CDC's direction after being told that everyone quarantined had shown negative results, when, in fact, her sample was excluded from the rest of the batch.

The person is the 14th confirmed coronavirus case in the nation, and the eighth in California.

As a result, another 14,840 new cases were reported in the province on Thursday, up from 2,015 new cases nationwide a day earlier.

Messonnier said the CDC had not yet been invited to send experts to China as part of a World Health Organization (WHO) team to investigate the outbreak that has killed more than 1,100 people.

Eventually, said Tom Skinner, the CDC's information officer on the ground in San Diego, the three set-aside samples were rediscovered and tested, revealing that one of the four evacuees initially said to be in the clear was actually infected.

UC San Diego Medical Center officials said Tuesday that it used pseudonyms on labels to protect patient privacy and that the CDC "used different naming protocols that were not shared with our institution".

Coronavirus: 'Way too early' to predict end of outbreak, World Health Organization says
Hubei authorities had previously only allowed infections to be confirmed by RNA tests, which can take days to process. Fever patients and close contacts of the confirmed infection cases will be placed under centralized quarantine.

"At some point, we are likely to see community spread in the USA or in other countries", Nancy Messonnier, director of the agency's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said during a briefing with reporters. Each kit can test about 700 to 800 specimens from patients, the agency said. "We are taking all necessary measures and precautions to minimize any potential exposures as we care for both potential and confirmed COVID-19 cases".

Vietnam officials have announced that an area of 10,000 people will be placed under quarantine for 20 days in the first mass quarantine outside China.

The case comes just days after a woman also aboard one of the flights was diagnosed with the virus.

"The individual is now isolated and receiving medical care at a designated hospital nearby", the CDC said, making Texas the seventh state to have a reported case.

"Things may not always go as smoothly as we may like", said Messonnier. More than 43,000 cases of the illness have been reported worldwide, the vast majority of them in China. The company, which first announced measures to halt the spread of COVID-19 on January 31, extended the restrictions from March 28 to April 24.

Kudlow said overall U.S. Delta canceled all flights to China through April 30.
