Hyundai joins forces with Californian electric vehicle maker Canoo

Hyundai will use Canoo's'skateboard platform to develop small electric cars

Hyundai Motor Group said it will jointly develop an electric vehicle platform with the Los Angeles-based Canoo startup, The latest startup leveraged by the automaker as part of a $ 87 billion boost to invest in electrification and other future technologies.

This partnership is expected to increase auto giant's investment in next gen vehicle technologies.

Between its investments in flying taxis, self-driving trucks and electric vehicle startups, Hyundai Motor Group is planting its fingers in quite a few pies when it comes to the future of mobility.

Mergers, acquisitions, and collaborations across one of the biggest industries like automotive, is no more a big thing for the companies.

Along with developing a set of regular mass-market EV vehicles, HMG will also use the Canoo platform to create its own zero-emissions goal built vehicles (PBVs), first previewed in concept form by a scalable pod-like vehicle designed for a range of different applications. It has now signed a deal to work with the Korean manufacturer to use the architecture for vehicles ranging from small EVs to large shared purpose-built vehicles (PBVs).

Using the skateboard as the basis for a compact-sized EV helps Hyundai save money on development costs due to the reduced time required to do the engineering.

The heart of Canoo's first vehicle, which looks more like a microbus than a traditional electric SUV, is the "skateboard" architecture that houses the batteries and the electric drivetrain in a chassis underneath the vehicle's cabin. "We will collaborate with Canoo engineers to develop a cost-effective concept of Hyundai platform that is autonomous and suitable for mass adoption".

This makes them the ideal technical partner for us as we develop into a pioneer in the future mobility industry, "said Albert Biermann, Head of Research and Development at Hyundai Motor Group, said in a statement".

For its part, Canoo is a company focused on building pod-like EVs for subscription services only, and recently opened the waitlist for its first electric vehicle.

Upcoming electric models from Hyundai will be designed using the innovative technology developed by Canoo.

Hyundai and Kia last year invested $89 million in Rimac Automobili, a nine-year-old Croatian company that aspires to build electric supercars and which is also backed by Porsche AG.

Hyundai is confident about this architecture, which will help it reduce production and cost complications.
