COVID-19 case confirmed in San Antonio, Texas, 15th case in US

Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, had said during a news briefing Wednesday morning that the worldwide shipments had been sent, but later in the afternoon said she was mistaken and the test kits had not been distributed to other countries.

The US is bracing for the new coronavirus that has now struck 60,000 people worldwide to spread in the US, officials said the previous day.

Yesterday, Dr Messonnier said: 'Chinese cases are dropping down, so we're optimistic that their aggressive methods are effective, but it's too soon to say'.

The hospital sent their specimens to a CDC lab in Atlanta for testing.

World Health Organization gives new coronavirus a name
But it was not immediately clear how the new methodology changed the results, nor why the death toll suddenly leapt up so high. Earlier in the day, Hubei officials asserted that they had discovered a new way to diagnose the deadly strain.

During trial runs in some states, the kits resulted in "inconclusive" results, Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said at a news conference on Wednesday.

Although the CDC expects to see more cases, health officials, including Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar, have urged Americans not to panic, saying the risk of contracting the virus is still low. NCIRD, which she heads, is part of CDC. It has been declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organization but has only been the subject of 12 confirmed US cases, while more than 300 tests here have been negative. "The problem was because of differences between San Diego labeling and what the CDC lab accepts, the sample from the woman didn't even reach testing stage so it was true that all samples that were tested were negative, and it was also true that the woman had COVID-19 [coronavirus] because her sample was not tested".

Hundreds of people, including U.S. State Department employees and their families, have arrived at military bases in California, Texas and Nebraska aboard chartered flights from Wuhan, a city of 11 million that is the epicenter for the virus. It also said its first patient to recover from Covid-19 was discharged from hospital. Fewer and fewer are coming in from China, especially from Hubei, ' said Dr Messonnier. That patient is one of 13 now known to be infected with the new coronavirus in the U.S.
