Coronavirus death toll leaps, top provincial officials in China’s Hubei province sacked

Jiang Chaoliang who has been removed as Hubei chief of the Communist Party of China inspects the newly completed Huoshenshan Hospital in Wuhan Hubei province China

"What the world has to think about is, we will have to get more "point of care" machines, allowing for rapid processing of samples, the WHO or worldwide agencies will have to think about mobilizing that".

In Hubei and its capital Wuhan, where tens of millions of people are trapped as part of an unprecedented quarantine effort, 242 new deaths were reported on Thursday. In the rest of the world, 490 people are infected and only one person has died.

The additions raised the death toll to 1,355 and the total number of infections nationwide to almost 60,000.

The total deaths from the more than 2-month-old outbreak as reported on Thursday stood at 1,367, with the total number of confirmed cases mounting to 59,804.

Both Australian and New Zealand have extensive trade ties with China, with trade in commodities, tourism and education especially vulnerable to disruption from the virus. Vietnam has confirmed 16 case of the diseases, a lot of them in the province.

Authorities in Hubei have been accused of concealing the gravity of the outbreak in late December and early January. Doctors who tried to share information early on were reprimanded by police for "spreading rumours".

The head of the Communist Party in China's Hubei province, Jiang Chaoliang, was sacked on February 13 after the death toll in the country had crossed 1,300.

Trump and Cuomo Prepare for Tense Meeting on Immigration
Cuomo appeared on CNN Thursday morning before his meeting with the president, calling the administration's latest move, "extortion".

"The new charts of infection rates look much more worrying, and have certainly dealt a blow to the narrative that things were beginning to improve, putting the gains of the past few days in doubt", said Chris Beauchamp, chief market analyst at IG.

"Oddly, this now is a moment of greater transparency", Sam Crane, political science professor at Williams College in MA, told AFP. Chinese officials said the method is only being used in Hubei, though it was expected to be gradually extended to other regions. "I thought: Is this real?" Health officials wearing protective suits sprayed disinfectant on vehicles.

As of Thursday, the number of reported cases outside of China were Japan (247), Singapore (50), Hong Kong (50), Thailand (33), South Korea (28), Taiwan (18), Malaysia (18), Germany (16), Australia (15), Vietnam (15), the USA (14), France (11), Macau (10), the United Kingdom (nine), the UAE (eight), Canada (seven), India (three), the Philippines (three), Italy (three), Russian Federation (two), Spain (two), Cambodia (one), Finland (one), Nepal (one), Sri Lanka (one), Sweden (one) and Belgium (one), the South China Morning Post said in a report citing various health agencies.

Many airlines have suspended flights to China, while countries have imposed bans or quarantine for people arriving from China, disrupting businesses and playing havoc with conferences and sporting events. Hundreds of people in some two dozen countries are infected.

Earlier this week, China's senior epidemiologist, Zhong Nanshan, had said he believed the coronavirus pandemic would peak in late February and be finished by April.

The outbreak has wreaked havoc with global events, with the World Mobile Congress in Spain cancelled and the Formula One Grand Prix in Shanghai postponed.
