AG William Barr to Testify Before House Judiciary Committee... in Six Weeks

The original sentencing recommendation of 7-9 years for Trump associate Roger Stone was not only "outrageous", it was also "immoral" and "utterly irresponsible" of the now-resigned prosecutors to advocate for something so extreme, legal expert Alan Dershowitz told Newsmax TV.

"No, because he undermines the ability of his Justice Department to function", McCarthy said, arguing that Trump's tweets on Justice Department matters could have unintended consequences.

But hours before the Justice Department announced its reversal decision, Trump had bashed the proposed punishment on Twitter in an early-morning tweet as "a miscarriage of justice".

On Wednesday, he told reporters President Trump did not tell Attorney General William Barr to do anything regarding Stone's sentencing.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer asked the Justice Department's internal watchdog to investigate, and senator Elizabeth Warren, a Democratic presidential candidate, said Mr Barr should resign or face impeachment.

Stone is a flamboyant political operative - a self-described "dirty trickster" - who was convicted previous year of lying to Congress, witness tampering and obstructing a congressional investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

Oregon State faces tough test vs No. 14 Oregon
The loss moved Arizona (20-4, 8-4 Pac-12) to fourth in conference standings and dropped Oregon State (19-5, 7-5 Pac-12) to fifth. The first half was largely a back-and-forth affair, with Oregon State leading by as many as five points and the Ducks by four.

Trump and the Justice Department say there was no communication.

They cited acts from "the past week alone" that included Mr Barr's decision - allegedly under pressure from Mr Trump - to overrule his own prosecutors and seek a lighter prison sentence for veteran Republican political consultant Roger Stone, who has been convicted of lying to Congress and witness tampering. And I want to thank, if you look at what happened, I want to thank the Justice Department for seeing this, this terrible thing.

Top Democrats are pushing for the GOP-led Senate Judiciary Committee to hold a hearing to review the decision that led to the sudden resignation of all four prosecutors Tuesday from the Stone criminal case. But skepticism is understandable, given Trump's demonstrated disrespect for the impartial administration of justice and his past actions, including his documented efforts to impede the investigation of special counsel Robert S. Mueller III.

Meanwhile, officials in Washington are speaking out on the fallout of the Justice Department's intervention in the case.

Trump said that it was unfair that prosecutors recommended such a high sentence for Roger Stone when Comey hadn't been jailed. The Judiciary Committee chairman told reporters on Capitol Hill he isn't planning to request Attorney General Barr to appear and testify in front of his panel.

Judge Amy Berman Jackson has the ultimate authority to hand down the sentence in Stone's case and the government said in its second filing that it deferred to her.
