Natalie Portman’s Oscars Cape Paid Tribute to Snubbed Female Directors

Rose McGowan

Natalie Portman wore a custom Dior gown complete with a cape to the Oscars on Sunday, with the cape featuring the names of female directors who weren't nominated for the best director Oscar.

And as pointed out by Jason Cregan, Portman has only starred in two films with a solo female director in her 26 year acting career.

"I wanted to recognize the women who were not recognized for their incredible work this year in my subtle way", Portman tells Los Angeles Times journalist Amy Kaufman in a video posted on Twitter.

Natalie Portman made a feminist statement with her 2020 Oscars look.

Portman decided to make her statement with a cape, and we can't think of a better way to do it. Natalie stated the following when interviewed on the Oscars 2020 red carpet.

NVIDIA Announces Attending MWC 2020 Due to Corona Virus
The development comes just days after LG and ZTE had announced that will not take part in this year's Mobile World Congress. Coronavirus has now killed more than 800 people - the vast majority in mainland China - and infected 34,800 others.

Natalie Portman has always been vocal regarding the underrepresentation of women in such awards. The names included Lulu Wang (The Farewell), Greta Gerwig (Marriage Story), Lorene Scafaria (Hustlers), Marielle Heller (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood) and Mari Diop (Atlantics) among others.

The initiative was born out of frustration over the absence of women in the best director category which this year celebrates an all-male set of nominees - with the website including phrases such as 'You stole our Oscars, so we stole your ads'. While announcing the five nominated filmmakers, Portman quipped, Here are the all male nominees.

For yet another year, the directing category failed to include any women.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has been criticised by many A-listers including best actress nominee Cynthia Erivo and comedienne Leslie Jones for overlooking people of colour and women in the nominations.
