WNBA's 8-year labor deal to hike average salary to $130000

New WNBA CBA Raises Player Salaries Dramatically

WNBA players will receive better pay, more marketing opportunities and increased family benefits as part of the new agreement. The average cash compensation will increase to almost $130,000, the first six-figure salary average in WNBA history. Under the new agreement, players will see a "53 percent increase in total cash compensation". "There are significant gains all across the board in this new agreement, and everything is in place for our players and the league to thrive". Top players could earn more than US$500,000 a year, which is more than triple the current maximum cash compensation.

It is an exciting, long-awaited moment for the WNBA to reach this agreement to provide players with the salaries and compensation they deserve, but let's not forget. this is just the beginning for women and sports. She also notes that the salary cap for each team will rise by 30% as well.

Not surprisingly, a deal that earned the full buy-in of both league and players alike drew more than the typical level of praise from all who sounded off on in in the wake of Tuesday's announcement. It calls for 50-50 revenue sharing starting in 2021, based on the league achieving revenue growth targets from broadcast agreements, marketing partnerships and licensing deals.

WNBA players opted out of the previous CBA in November.

Players will also have access to more accommodating flights, and will receive premium economy class status for any flights booked for regular season air travel. Each player will get their own hotel room on road trips.

Perhaps one of the biggest improvements in this agreement is that all players are eligible to collect their full salary during maternity leave.

"Cathy Engelbert, the first WNBA commissioner, brought her perspective as a former basketball student, her experience as a business professional and her passion for the game into these negotiations", said WNBPA President Nneka Ogwumike.

The trailblazing benefits would also include a dedicated area in stadiums for nursing mothers, and a $5,000 child care stipend. Players can also take advantage of family planning benefits, with up to $60,000 available for veteran players paying for adoption, surrogacy, oocyte cryopreservation (egg freezing) or fertility treatment.

The CBA represents a significant step forward for players who have had to play year-round in overseas leagues to make any significant money playing professionally.

"I was really proud of Cathy (Engelbert) and the deal she was able to strike with the players association", Kobe said.

The deal also include mental health and domestic violence education and resources and a program to provide off-season job opportunities to prepare players for their post-retirement life.
