Missing Ohio teen found dead in chimney

Body of missing Ohio teen found in chimney, police say

Nearly four weeks after 14-year-old Harley Dilly disappeared while walking to school, officials in Port Clinton, Ohio, said his body was found trapped inside the chimney of a vacant home.

The state Bureau of Criminal Investigation, part of the Ohio Attorney General's Office, issued an advisory at 7:58 a.m. on Tuesday to end the hunt for Dilly, who vanished on his way to school on December 20 in Port Clinton, about 80 miles west of downtown Cleveland.

"Port Clinton Police Chief Robert Hickman said in a news conference Tuesday, "[it] appears Harley climbed antenna tower to the roof, and into the chimney. His coat and glasses dropped through a flue into the second floor and a blockage between floors trapped him.

The house in Port Clinton, east of Cleveland, is owned by another family and had a lock box and deadbolt.

There were no signs of forced entry to the house, and there was a lockbox for keys, Hickman said.

Dilly's family fully cooperated throughout the investigation, Hickman said previously.

"The chimney is between the second and third floors and is 9 by 13 inches", Hickman said.

He was seen on video leaving his home on the 500 block of E. 5th Street at 6.08am. Once inside, Dilly's coat and glasses were found.

His disappearance was reported the day after he never made it to school.

Police eventually located and removed Harley's body from the chimney.

A vague statement from the Ohio Attorney General's Office sent to media this morning said the "child has been recovered".

"His family was notified early this morning, and this appears to be an accident", the police chief said.

"R.I.H. Harley Dilly and fly high, confirmed by the PD both out there and here in my town" she wrote with seven emojis of a crying face.

No cause of death has been determined.

Authorities found Dilly's body Monday night during another search of the neighborhood, a residential area along Lake Erie that is about 40 miles east of Toledo. The teen had climbed inside a chimney and gotten stuck, according to WJW.

Police also had asked residents to review their home security footage, hoping that might offer clues about what happened.

An autopsy will be performed on Tuesday, but there is no evidence of foul play, according to Hickman.

¯ K-9 officers did search around the home early during the search for Harley.

"This is not the outcome anyone wanted, but. we have some closure for the family", Hickman said.

Authorities said 14-year-old Harley Dilly's death is now being considered an accident and they have found no signs of foul play.
