House to Vote to Send Impeachment Articles to Senate

John Roberts

Although the trial itself is unlikely to start until next week, Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts could be sworn in to preside over the process on either Thursday or Friday.

Like Clinton, Trump is expected to be acquitted. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) in the Iowa caucuses.

Also, Twitter was not a thing the last time this happened.

One of the most contentious issues that has yet to be resolved is whether to have witnesses in the Senate trial.

Wednesday's House vote would allow the Senate to begin considering the charges against Trump next week, McConnell said.

The action will launch the Senate proceeding, only the third presidential impeachment trial in USA history, a dramatic endeavor coming amid the backdrop of a politically divided nation and an election year. The others are Clinton and, in 1868, Andrew Johnson. Trump has denied any wrongdoing, labelling the impeachment as a "hoax" and "witch-hunt".

Also on Wednesday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will reveal who will serve as prosecutors in the Senate trial. The opportunity to serve as an impeachment manager will offer a high-profile turn in the spotlight for the lawmakers who have been chosen and a chance to elevate their standing in Congress and with liberal voters.

The crux of the Democrats' case is the allegation that Trump tried to leverage a White House meeting and military aid, sought by Ukraine to combat Russian military aggression, to pressure Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to launch an investigation of former vice president Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden, as well as a probe of an unfounded theory that Kyiv conspired with Democrats to interfere in the 2016 presidential election. The others are Reps.

The managers are a mix of key players in the House's impeachment inquiry and a couple of new faces: Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff of California, Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler of New York, Hakeem Jeffries of New York, Zoe Lofgren of California, Val Demings of Florida, Jason Crow of Colorado and Sylvia Garcia of Texas.

All have a legal background, and Pelosi told reporters that her emphasis was on choosing "litigators, the emphasis is on comfort level in the courtroom".

Stewart enjoyed the idea of tackling a new version of the villains of a lifetime. Star Trek: Picard will premiere on CBS All Access on January 23 .

The impeachment managers are expected to split which of them presents the various arguments of the House's case in the first part of the Senate trial. Undermined our national security.

Sen. Roy Blunt, the chairman of the Senate Rules Committee, said the changes are necessary to keep the emotional and intense impeachment proceedings running smoothly. Inside, Pelosi told them she had chosen them for the high visibility role. Once the articles successfully land in the Senate, there will be a few days of housekeeping and procedural work.

This October 9, 2018, file photo shows Republican US Senate candidate Mitt Romney answering a question about tariffs during the debate with Democratic opponent Jenny Wilson in the America First Event Center in Cedar City, Utah. He, along with the other senators running for president in 2020, will be stuck in Washington for a six-days-a-week trial instead of campaigning for the nation's first presidential caucus, to be held February 3.

"Hear ye! Hear ye!" But senators could vote to change the schedule. The trial is expected to start early next week. But it takes just 51 votes during the trial to approve rules or call witnesses.

It isn't clear yet how long the trial will last, with some Republicans, like Senator Lindsey Graham, pushing for a no-witness trial and quick acquittal and others claiming they want to hear from witnesses. McConnell is hesitant to call new witnesses who would prolong the trial. With a 53-seat Republican majority, four GOP senators would have to vote with all Democrats to reach the 51-vote threshold.

Aides to some vulnerable senators in moderate states, including Sen.

"This is a political impeachment", said House Republican Doug Collins.

Any plan for witnesses would likely involve depositions and testimony from people called by Republicans and Democrats.

"We should have witnesses, and we should have documents", Pelosi said. "If they don't want to make a comment they know how to say, 'No comment'".

Senators Sanders of Vermont, Warren of MA and Klobuchar of Minnesota all made the stage for January's primary debate - but the three candidates could face being taken off the campaign trail as the impeachment trial moves to their chamber this week. "Their pathetic attempts to remove me from office are not only an attack on me, but they're an attack on YOU". "There are benefits of running as a senator", Schumer added, "and there are liabilities".
