US House to vote to send Trump impeachment trial to Senate

Pelosi is also expected to name impeachment managers to lead the prosecution against the president but did not tell the caucus who would the managers would be.

Though Democrats hoped to pressure Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) into adopting trial rules that would mandate the role of witnesses, that's nearly certainly not going to happen.

Trump, joined by his Republican party, has accused Democrats of one-sided impeachment proceedings against him.

"We'll have I think about a 10-minute debate and we'll vote on it and then send everything over".

If it's already clear that the witnesses whom the president has successfully silenced thus far, despite their first-hand knowledge of what he knew and when he knew it in the context of shaking down Ukraine for his personal benefit, are indeed likely to be called, why take the trouble of saying more about the need for them to appear in the impeachment trial? It would then be up to Supreme Court Justice John Roberts to rule on whether the executive privilege argument is valid.

Trump has denied any wrongdoing and has dismissed his impeachment as a partisan bid to undo his 2016 election win as he tries to win re-election in November.

But Pelosi, D-Calif., hasn't announced the precise timing for a House vote on that resolution, which would formally set the stage for a Senate trial as early as this week. McConnell asked. He rejected Pelosi's recent suggestions that whatever the Senate verdict, Trump will be "impeached forever". It has nothing to do with the rule of law by any stretch because the articles they came up with don't actually cite any crime.

"The President and the Senators will be held accountable", Pelosi said in a statement. She warned the Republican-led Senate off any idea of simply dismissing the case against Trump.

Trump was impeached on two articles, for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, on 18 December.

Mr Trump delayed almost $400 million in aide as Ukraine battled Russian Federation on its border while he pushed the country's new president to investigate political rival Joe Biden.

But the Republican majority in the Senate will set the trial's rules and McConnell has not committed to allowing any witnesses or new documents. He instead could steer the process towards a quick acquittal.

That trial included ten days of testimony from witnesses. Allowing new witness testimony could be a double-edged sword for Democrats, as some Republicans have said they want to call their own witnesses.

The Senate is moving closer to a rebuke of Donald Trump over Iran, as Democratic Senator Tim Kaine said he has enough Republican votes to pass a resolution limiting the president's ability to carry out a military attack against that country without congressional authorization.

Meanwhile, the president's impeachment legal team is coming together as the trial quickly approaches. Lee and Paul were the first Republicans to declare their support for the measure, after an administration briefing last week they found both frustrating and insulting, noting how officials refused to say when, if ever, they would consult Congress before launching such a strike - and urging lawmakers to fall in line behind the president.

That could make life hard for the four senators who are running for the Democratic nomination: Elizabeth Warren, Michael Bennet, Amy Klobuchar and Bernie Sanders.
