Esper has seen no hard evidence for embassies' threat claim

"The answer to both is a strong YES., but it doesn't really matter because of his frightful past!" he went on.

Later on Friday, during an interview with Fox News, Trump got more specific than any other official had in public, saying he believed four embassies would have been targeted.

"We hold Iran responsible for its proxies, and we will retain the right to exercise self-defense and take action, where legally available and appropriate, to hold those proxies accountable for their actions", Esper told NPR.

"Our ability to deter attacks had obviously broken down", the attorney general said, referring to a series of escalating confrontations between Washington and Tehran that preceded Soleimani's killing.

Pompeo has repeatedly said that Soleimani was planning an attack on USA diplomats and service members in the weeks leading up to his death and that information presented by top US intelligence officials made it necessary for the U.S.to kill Soleimani. "We had a situation where the Iranians had already embarked on a series of escalating violent actions taken against our allies, taken against the American people, our troops, with the avowed objective of driving us out of the Middle East".

Trump reacted to his inability to convince his critics by suggesting that killing Soleimani needed no explanation. Relations between the two parties are at a particularly hard juncture, given the vote a year ago to impeach Trump in the Democratic-led House and his upcoming trial in the Republican-led Senate.

Trump took another blow by sharing a photo of Pelosi and Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer, another Democrat, in traditional Islamic dress. "So let's not screw it up", McConnell said.

Democratic Sen. Chris Coons of DE in a Sunday interview with "Fox News Sunday" said that in a classified briefing with the Trump administration on Iran, senators "got less detailed information than President Trump shared with Laura Ingraham".

The Democrat-controlled House of Representatives passed a resolution on Thursday aiming to prevent Trump from going to war. U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper said he did not see specific evidence that Iran was planning an attack on embassies, during a Sunday interview on CBS's "Face the Nation", but felt it was likely.

According to Secretary of Defense Mark Esper, there isn't actually any intelligence showing that Iran was preparing to attack U.S. sites, as Trump claimed last week.

"What the President said with regard to the four embassies is what I believe as well".

While Trump and his administration have repeatedly insisted that the threat of an attack on American interests in the Middle East was "imminent", they have shared what many view to be conflicting statements publicly.

Esper appeared to contradict the commander in chief on Sunday, telling NBC News he had seen no evidence pointing to imminent threats on four embassies. He urged support for the war powers measure.
