Serena Williams adds another trophy to her collection

Serena Williams

In her speech following the win, Serena congratulated her opponent, fellow American Jessica Pegula, announcing that she would be donating her entire cash prize, $43,000 United States dollars (just over $62,000 AUD).

Williams didn't do media until it was all finished and by that stage was pretty exhausted. Her dominance of the game for two decades extends to the Olympics too, and she has collected gold medals at three different Games: Sydney 2000, Beijing 2008 and London 2012, where she is pictured here.

"Serena, thank you playing doubles with me, it has been so much fun and the only regrets I have is that we didn't do this sooner".

"I've had some good matches".

Asked whether she felt patronised by near-constant mentions of her motherhood, Williams said her emotion instead was pride.

As for the final, it wasn't one-sided like her 6-1 6-1 win over Amanda Anisimova in the semifinals and she had to dig deep for this victory.

"But I remember it being really intense and really good".

It was the 38-year-old Williams first tournament victory in three years, but she tempered celebrations by saying her thoughts were with Australians.

"I would be lying if I said it didn't [cross my mind]", she said.

Thunder get a series of lessons from the short-handed Lakers
The Thunder got as close as 11 points with 2:37 to go before a short jumper and a 3-pointer by Kuzma ended the rally. James played on Friday night and had 35 points, 16 rebounds and seven assists in a win over the Dallas Mavericks .

Now Williams is going to Australia with a 24th slam as she tries to put Margaret Court at the top of the all-time list. "I think you can see the relief on my face", she said, shimmering from the court.

It was the third Brisbane title and 16th WTA singles title for Pliskova, who was facing Keys for the first time.

Unfortunately for them though they came up against a pairing who played outstanding tennis together. I worked really hard at it in the past 8 months to get back from the baby.

"Obviously, it's just one step toward the next goal".

Williams, whose last title win was in January of 2017, was clearly filled with so many emotions.

The 25-year-old continued in the same fearless vein at the start of the final, seemingly untroubled by her heavily bandaged left thigh as she chased down everything Williams delivered and even broke in the opening game.

She defended four break points in the first game of the second set, but was broken at her next turn from the line.

"But the key was trying to move her".
