Roger Federer issues non-committal reply to Greta Thurnberg fossil fuel criticism

Wearing whites and wigs, a group of young people staged the tennis sit-in at the Lausanne branch of Credit Suisse in November 2018 to highlight their campaign and urge Swiss maestro Roger Federer to end his sponsorship deal with the bank.

Greta Thunberg last week retweeted a post that said Credit Suisse has provided $57 billion to companies looking for new fossil fuel deposits.

For its component, Credit Suisse has stated it is "looking for to straighten its auto loan profiles with the purposes of the Paris Agreement [to combat climate change] and also has actually lately introduced in the context of its global climate approach that it will certainly no more buy brand-new coal-fired nuclear power plant".

Federer, who is now taking part in a fundraising event in Melbourne in aid of Australia's bushfire crisis, released a statement this weekend in response but did not address Credit Suisse directly.

The hashtag #WakeUpRoger went viral this week following the trial of twelve Swiss activists who staged a demonstration a year ago by playing tennis in branches of Credit Suisse, highlighting Federer's links with the company.

Lawyer Aline Bonard, among a legal team deployed to defend the Lausanne Climate Action activists, said the court in suburban Renens acquitted the defendants over the stunt that riffed off Federer's role with the bank.

"If anyone can chip in, that's great because it's nice to show solidarity and help in a situation, which has become quite incredible in this country", the 38-year-old said, joining other tennis players in pledging funds.

'We owe it to them and ourselves to listen.

Roger Federer's statement regarding the protests from climate activists, asking him to break ties with Credit Suisse. Roger, do you support them?'

The activists were charged with trespassing and fined 21,600 Swiss francs ($22,200) at the time, but in their appeal hearing Judge Colelough said they had acted proportionately and waived the financial penalty.

"I appreciate the reminders concerning my responsibility as an individual, as an athlete and as an entrepreneur, and I undertake to use this privileged position to dialogue on important questions with my sponsors", responded Federer in a pr release.

The proud owner of 20 Grand Slam titles retorted that he would hold talks with his sponsors at the Swiss bank, which he has had long-term business links with.
