Self-help author and activist Marianne Williamson has dropped out of the race to be the next United States president, after running a longshot campaign advocating an "agenda for peace" and a "spiritual awakening" for America.

"I stayed in the race to take advantage of every possible effort to share our message", Williamson wrote in her statement.

Williamson further set herself apart by saying the other candidates' policy proposals were not going to be enough to defeat President Donald Trump. "I feel that we have done that", said Williamson, who campaigned against trickle down economics and wanted to create a Departments of Peace and Children and Youth, invest in African American communities and combat climate change.

In announcing her exit from the race, Williamson said she hoped other campaigns might embrace her ideas, from "creation of a more mindful politics, to changing from an economic to a humanitarian bottom line, to initiating a season of moral fix".

"As of today, I am suspending my campaign", added Williamson.

The departure of Williamson leaves 13 candidates in the race, but only six have qualified for the debate next Tuesday in Iowa.
