California sent 35 disaster specialists to Puerto Rico following a series of earthquakes that have caused extensive damage and power outages on the Island.

Vazquez explained that the preliminary figure of damages amounts to 110 million dollars, which mainly correspond to 539 affected structures, damaged that reached its peak last Tuesday morning with a 6.4 manitude quake, followed by 5.8 magnitude on the Richter scale.

In an "Aftershock Forecast" updated Sunday, the USGS said the chance of a magnitude 6.0 natural disaster or higher was 11% - up from 7% a week ago.

"Please no more", tweeted Nick Silva, showing a crack in his wall.

Hundreds of quakes have shaken the island since the new year, though most were too slight to be felt.

There were no immediate reports of injuries, and no tsunami warning was issued.

President Donald Trump has approved emergency assistance to the commonwealth, which has weathered quakes and hurricanes in recent months.

Puerto Rico's government made the request directly to Newsom's Office after several earthquakes damaged the southwest coast of Puerto Rico over the past week, leaving more than 4,000 people in shelters. The declaration also means $5 million in federal funds could be spent on disaster relief.

The cities of Lares, Adjuntas, Ponce and San German suffered a blackout due to the quake, Puerto Rico's electricity authority said on Twitter.

The stronger quake that struck on January 7 caused the ground to shift downward and to the west by up to 14 centimetres on the eastern two-thirds of the island, according to NASA. Since then aftershocks, majority barely perceptible, have been part of daily life on the island.

Vázquez is seeking a major disaster declaration from the US government, which would free up more federal funds. "It's a complex zone".
