Canada Strong campaign launched for families of Iran plane crash victims

Tehran plane crash memorial in Edmonton

Iran said it had "unintentionally" shot down the Boeing which crashed shortly after it took off from Tehran airport.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau held a press conference in Ottawa on Saturday and said that Iran must take "full responsibility" and that a full and complete investigation must be conducted.

On Saturday, the Iranian military said it mistook the plane for a "hostile target" and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani blamed "human error". "We are one family, one big family, a Canadian family". All 176 people on board were killed.

Asked by The Current's Matt Galloway what exactly that meant, Mendicino said that "in the short-term, it begins with the devastating admission that Iran provided". "I haven't seen Iranian people like this since 1979, the revolution", said Mehrdad Ariannejad, CEO of Tirgan, a non-profit organization that organized the memorial.

"I'm calling on all of us Canadians in this moment of need - including, importantly, corporate leaders and businesses across the country - to support these families with the unexpected expenses that have tragically fallen upon them", he said.

The family members of those killed on Flight PS752 are likely entitled to monetary compensation under global aviation law, lawyers say, but could also achieve it through a comprehensive settlement with the government of Iran.

"We will ensure that this initiative is very well governed and managed with full transparency and accountability", Fakih said.

Woman posed as teenage boy to sexually assault 'up to 50 girls'
When police called at her home in March previous year to check up on her they discovered she had gone to Kent to visit a friend. In July that year Watts admitted to Met officers she had been sexually active as "Jake" with the first three victims.

Canada has already designated the al-Quds branch of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist entity, Matas said, so it should follow through and list the Guards as a whole.

Asked how Canada would keep Iran accountable, Mendicino said the North American country would "continue to engage Iran" on the issue.

Mendicino's comments doubled down on those previously made by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who said on Saturday that Iran must take full responsibility for the "horrific" act, regardless of whether it was a mistake.

Lawyers say that there are three main ways for family members to achieve financial compensation: through civil action, through the International Court of Justice or through international diplomacy.

Mourners place flowers by photos of the victims in front of the stage before the start of a memorial service for the Ukrainian Airlines flight PS752 which was downed in Iran at the Saville Community Sports Centre in Edmonton, Canada on January 12, 2020.

According to the Convention, airlines are responsible for compensating the families of victims in the event of an "accident" that is broadly defined and would include a rocket attack, Fiorante said. "They are hurt, angry and grieving", said Trudeau.
