Sony stuns CES with an electric show vehicle, the Vision-S

Sony Vision-S

Along with a plethora of cameras all around the vehicle, there are a gazillion of sensors taking care of safety and autonomous driving in the Vision S concept.

Indeed, you could think of the Vision-S as being an electric shopping list that Sony is hoping automakers and Tier 1 suppliers will decide to buy from. A total of 33 sensors including CMOS image sensors and ToF (Time of Flight) sensors are embedded within the vehicle, in order to detect and recognize people and objects inside and outside the auto and provide highly advanced driving support.

The Sony Vision-S is an electric concept sedan that showcases the Japanese tech company's sensors and in-car entertainment technologies. You can use gesture controls to control it, and it can analyse the road in front of you. There's even a panoramic screen in place of a dashboard for displaying driving information and entertainment.

The cabin features Sony's 360 Reality Audio that puts a speaker in each of the four seats with object-based spatial audio for an immersive listening experience.

De Blasio: "NYPD on high alert" is preparing for threats from Iran
An American airstrike killed Soleimani, one of Iran's top military leaders, along with two Iraqi militia officials on Thursday. Supreme Court to reconsider a lower court decision that challenged a popular healthcare law signed by former U.S.

While presenting the vehicle onstage, Sony chief executive Kenichiro Yoshida said the Vision-S is underpinned by a "newly-designed EV platform". Time of Flight is also found in the Vision-S, which are sensors inside and outside the vehicle that can identify people and objects.

Sony built the vehicle with a whole host of automotive heavyweights - everyone from Bosch and continental to Nvidia and Qualcomm.

The concept incorporates Sony's imaging and sensing technologies as well as on-board software that's regulated by its AI, telecommunication and cloud technologies, in order to continuously evolve and update its features. This is facilitated by a suite of 33 automotive-grade sensors installed on the car's exterior as well as interior, comprised of 12 cameras, 17 ultrasonic and radar sensors, as well as three solid-state lidar sensors. Claimed performance figures are promising, with a 0 to 100 km/h time of just 4.3 seconds and a top speed of 240 km/h.
