Tuna King

Kiyoshi Kimura, the self-proclaimed "sushi king", spent big money on a massive bluefin tuna at Tokyo's Toyosu fish market on Sunday, with a bid of 193 million Japanese yen, almost $1.8 million, according to Kyodo News.

The tuna was caught off northern Aomori Prefecture and weighed 276 kilogramme, according to NHK, which translates into a price of about 700,000 yen per kilogram.

Kimura also spent top dollar for a 278 kg tuna that he paid 2.4 million pounds for a year ago, according to The Times of London.

In last year's new year auction, Kimura paid a record US$3.1 million to win a 278kg tuna.

The company said the tuna will be served at the chain's restaurant in nearby Tsukiji, the former location of the capital's major fish market. It was the second highest price in history following one recorded a year ago.

"I placed a bid in the hopes of giving the best tuna to our customers", said Kiyomura President Kiyoshi Kimura. Kiyomura is a familiar face in the annual bidding war, winning the New Year's auction for six consecutive years until 2017.

The traditional auction is now being held in a new market in an area called Toyosu.
