Citizenship (Amendment) Bill is unconstitutional, violates Article 14: TMC in Lok Sabha

Amidst protests across Assam, the controversial Citizenship Amendment Bill has been passed in the Lok Sabha.

The bill, if approved by Parliament, would let members of six religious minority communities-Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian-from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh seek Indian citizenship, should they face persecution in their home countries.

The bill was originally introduced in 2016 during the Modi government's first term but lapsed after protests and an alliance partner's withdrawal. People in the North-Eastern states are angry over Hindus, who arrived from Bangladesh illegally, getting the citizenship status in the region. He said the bill is divisive and unconstitutional, it violates article 14 of the Constitution.

The All Manipur Students Union (AMSU) has also called for a 15-hour total shutdown Tuesday in support of the shutdown call by the Northeast Student Organisation (NESO).

The sweater features an image of Santa at a table with three white lines in front of him and the words "Let It Snow" below. He packs it in ideal lines on his coffee table and then takes a big whiff to smell the high-quality aroma of the snow.

Why some people oppose it: Opposition groups have blasted the bill for fundamentally altering how citizenship is decided.

Citing these reasons, Tharoor said he wishes to oppose the proposed Bill and request the permission of the Speaker, to elaborate upon these submissions before the House in a "full discussion" so that the motion for introduction is not allowed, the notice read.

"We fear, in particular, that the careful exclusion of Muslims from the ambit of the bill will greatly strain the pluralistic fabric of the country", the statement said.

"Please save this country from this law and save the home minister", Asaduddin Owaisi, an opposition MP from the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen party, told parliament.
