Status Yellow wind warning for Cork on Sunday, Orange for Kerry

Storm Atiyah bears down on Ireland

Met Eireann said a status yellow wind warning will come into effect from 1pm until 6am tomorrow for Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan, Roscommon, Tipperary and Waterford, with gusts between 90 and 110km/h likely.

The National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management (NDFEM) says its severe weather team have been monitoring Storm Atiyah, with Met Éireann, as it moves towards Ireland.

Status Red Wind Warning for Kerry which is valid from today, Sunday 8th December, 2019 at 4 p.m.to 7p.m. Winds will reach speeds in excess of 80km/h with gusts in excess of 130km/h for a time this evening. Due to a combination of high seas and storm surge there is a possibility of coastal flooding.

Winds will increase further reaching orange level for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, Clare, Cork, Kerry and Limerick.

The weather forecaster had previously issued three weather warnings for different places across the country.

Temperatures will drop back to 8 or 9C overnight but the wind is due to pick up, making it feel cooler.

'As well as strong winds there will be large coastal waves in the South West, so bear this in mind before heading out in these regions.

On Sunday fresh to strong west to southwest winds will reach gale force along coasts. Showers affecting coastal areas at first, wintry across northern Scotland.
