Pearl Harbor Attack Survivors Mark 78th Anniversary in Hawaii

About 30 World War II veterans and some 2,000 members of the public joined the survivors, the youngest of whom are now in their late 90s, to commemorate the anniversary of the December 7, 1941, attack that launched the USA into World War II.

In addition to Trump's order, governors throughout the USA have ordered flags on state property to be flown at half-staff.

He was armed for his job providing security for the fast attack submarine USS Columbia, which is at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam for maintenance, officials said.

Frank Wasniewski, 100, the last living Hudson County Pearl Harbor survivor, was represented at the event by his niece, Geralyn Crawford of Bayonne.

"I always come out to pay respect for the 2,403 men that were killed that day, including 1,177 of my shipmates on the Arizona", Conter told Hawaii News Now.

In a separate gathering, the family of sailor Lauren Bruner, the second-to-last person of the 337 men to get off the USS Arizona alive, who died at age 98, will hold a funeral at the USS Arizona Memorial Saturday evening.

According to the Pearl Harbor Visitors Bureau, 2,403 died in the attacks, including 2,008 from the Navy, 218 from the Army, 109 Marines, and 68 civilians.

Back in 1994, congress dubbed December seventh as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. Each year, almost 2 million people visit the white memorial structure built above the ship.

Saturday morning a ceremony was held at the Doris Miller memorial statue in Waco.

Every year, fewer people remain who can share their firsthand experiences of the attack.

Bruner will be the 44th USS Arizona survivor interred on the ship. The three Arizona survivors still living plan to be buried with their families.

Conter, the USS Arizona survivor from Grass Valley, California, said he will attend Bruner's interment ceremony later Saturday.

"Lauren was a good sailor, a good man".
