Google rolls out live captions on to Pixel 3 and Pixel 3A

Google Live Captions is a feature, which provides captions to users for audio and videos that are played on the smartphone. It's officially still exclusive to the 2019 devices, but Google said it plans to make Recorder available for older Pixel phones. Posting on Reddit, a Pixel 2 XL user shared screenshots of an "a" - in some cases other letters as well - popping up randomly in the middle of the display.

The Recorder app uses the power of AI to automatically transcribe the users audio recordings and it also lets its users search for specific parts of a clip.

Express.co.uk has tested the app thoroughly during our time with the Pixel 4 and can confirm it works excellently.

Why is this recorder app so special? The transcription has a "high level of accuracy" so that should solve some problems as well. Aside from letting you record things like lectures, interviews, even conversations (with consent of course), it will auto-transcribe these recordings using speech-to-text technology.

Markets Right Now: Stocks open higher on Wall Street
Gold rose $2.90 to $1,476.90 per ounce, silver rose 14 cents to $16.94 per ounce and copper rose 1 cent to $2.65 per pound. The Russell 2000 index of smaller company stocks picked up 0.94 points, also less than 0.1%, to 1,614.83.

While there are third-party apps that can do this, a lot of them are not always free and the aforementioned concerns about privacy are there.

If you have a Pixel 2 or later, you should head to Google Play right now and download Recorder.

Live Captions now only support English, but Google plans to add more languages in the future and it's also working with Android device manufacturers for wider availability of Live Captions. That announcement was made in late October, and could just see Google tweak availability on the Play Store.

Both the Pixel 3 and its budget variant the Pixel 3a will gain Live Caption over the upcoming weeks as it continues to roll out.
