Qualcomm announces world’s largest fingerprint sensor for smartphones

After working with Intel on its 5G roadmap, Apple inked a new deal with Qualcomm in April, when it also settled its legal matters with the chipmaker.

An under-display fingerprint sensor, Cult of Mac noted, won't take up room on the screen. However, various cybersecurity groups have found ways to subvert the authentication process.

While Apple is expected to use a range of components for its antenna system, depending on the carrier that the iPhone is developed for, Amon seemed confident that Qualcomm is differentiating itself among its competitors in terms of the speed and reliability of its technology. It has ultrasonic sensors with the most popular brand using them being Samsung.

While last year's 3D Sonic Sensor measured 4mm x 9mm, the new 3D Sonic Max measures 20mm x 30mm.

Qualcomm's latest mobile computing platforms were teased at the company's Tech Summit in Hawaii, where it also announced the new and improved second-gen ultrasonic fingerprint sensor for smartphones.

Capers also explained that his crew was initially under the belief that the ball failed to go completely through the cylinder. It was determined that the official scorer incorrectly had ruled that Shaquille O'Neal fouled out with 51.9 seconds left.

It allows users to use the scanner with wet fingers, so the sensor will still work after a workout or in the summer. The speed of recognition was slow and there were some security issues too with the sensor which allowed any fingerprint to open the phone through certain types of screen protectors. In fact, it's so big, it can register two fingers at once (via Engadget).

Given their previous partnership, Samsung may use Qualcomm's fingerprint readers in its next generation of high-end handsets.

According to Chinese news site Economic Daily News (via Cult of Mac), Apple will be meeting with Foxconn subsidiary GIS for the goal of discussing components needed to equip next year's iPhones with an under-display fingerprint reader. Given the ultrasonic technology only works with OLED displays, the sensor will likely be limited to higher-end iPhones.

Apple has arranged for a representative to meet with Taiwanese touchscreen-related manufacturer GIS next week to discuss development of an iPhone... And it is worth mentioning that this is the only feature offered by the iPhones for biometric authentication.
