3 hurt, gunman dead after shooting at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard

After earlier media reports suggested, citing eyewitnesses that the alleged gunman was a local sailor who shot three civilians, the Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam (JBPHH) confirmed in the statement that a USA serviceman had injured three Department of Defence civilian staffers before committing suicide.

More than 19,000 active duty are stationed at the base.

The shooter's name has not been released, but he was an active-duty United States sailor assigned to the submarine USS Columbia, officials said in a statement on the Twitter page for Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

"Preliminary reports indicate that the Chief and his team are safe", a defence official said.

The identify of the gunman and of the victims have not been released. "The sailor reportedly shot and injured three Department of Defense civilian workers before shooting themself".

Officials would provide an update "when we have further information", the posting said.
