Amazon Braket: Quantum computing as a service

During its annual AWS re:Invent conference, it unveiled Amazon Braket, the AWS Center for Quantum Computing and the Amazon Quantum Solutions Lab.

Quantum computing is coming to the cloud though as the world's two biggest cloud providers.

Not being able to offer quantum computing "may impact the potential for government contracts", he told the E-Commerce Times.

Braket has security and encryption baked in at each level.

The Amazon Braket service will allow developers, researchers and scientists to experiment with quantum computers from providers like D-Wave, IonQ and Rigetti.

Google Fixes Problems, Brings Pixel 4 Features to Older Pixels
Otherwise, Google has also delivered two more Pixel 4 tweaks via the December update that apply to earlier Pixel phones as well. Google released the December security patch for its Pixel range yesterday while notoriously skipping its newest Pixel 4 duo.

Quantum computing is important to many in the United States government, noted Jim McGregor, principal analyst at Tirias Research.

The AWS Centre for Quantum Computing will bring together researchers and engineers from Amazon with leading academic institutions in quantum computing, to develop more powerful quantum computing hardware and identify novel quantum applications with the goal of boosting innovation in science and industry.

The lab is a program to connect AWS customers with quantum computing experts from Amazon and a select set of consulting partners. This is smart business, as it's hedging its bets without incurring the cost of building a quantum computer itself. In 2017, AWS collaborated with VMware to introduce VMware Cloud on AWS, giving companies who are virtualized on VMware (which is the vast majority of enterprises) the ability to use the same on-premises VMware tools that they had been using for years to manage their infrastructure on AWS.

Verizon's chief executive Hans Vestberg said: "We are first in the world to launch Mobile Edge Compute - deeply integrating Verizon's 5G Edge platform with Wavelength to allow developers to build new categories of applications and network cloud experiences built in ways we can't even imagine yet. The future has arrived and you now have the opportunity to write quantum algorithms and to run them on actual quantum computers", wrote Jeff Barr in an AWS announcement.

Once the technology is mature, both on-premises and cloud solutions will be available, Enderle predicted, noting that "IBM already has been showcasing an on-premises prototype system". "It turns out this is hard to do, and that's the reason why existing options for on-premises solutions haven't gotten much traction today", said Matt Garman, Vice President, Compute Services, at AWS.
