Riot settling gender discrimination lawsuit for $10 million Dollars

League of Legends: Riot Games Will Pay Every Female Employee Since 2014 With $10M Fund After Settling Lawsuit

League of Legends developer Riot Games has agreed to pay at least $10 million to former women employees as settlement in a lawsuit regarding gender discrimination, the Los Angeles Times reported today.

Later in the year the State of California started investigating Riot over gender discrimination as well, but as reported by the LA Times, Riot is paying $10 million Dollars to settle the lawsuit.

The suit was filed by two employees in November 2018. The suit laid out allegations that Riot fostered a "men-first" "bro culture", where harassment and inappropriate behavior like "crotch-grabbing, phantom humping, and sending unsolicited and unwelcome pictures of male genitalia" and managers circulating a "hot girl list", ranking female employees by attractiveness, went unchecked.

The lawsuit said that culture led to sexual harassment and misconduct.

We believe that this and Riot's policy changes help continue the progress toward equity that we've made over the past year.

In response to the settlement, a Riot Games spokesperson told the L.A. Times: "We're pleased to have a proposed settlement to fully resolve the class-action lawsuit". "The agreement is another important step forward and demonstrates our commitment to live up to our values and make Riot an inclusive environment for the best talent in the industry". Full-time executives are likewise getting more cash than contractual workers. The company has worked hard over the a year ago to address the culture of sexism, creating a new recruitment, hiring and promotion structure, bringing in third-party culture consusltants and creating a new diversity director role, as well as adding women in leadership roles.

The plaintiff's lawyer Ryan Saba, however, said that "this shows that Riot is serious about changing the culture at the company". The employee numbers are usually representing the company's worldwide workforce and the case is related to the LA headquarters.

Despite these internal improvements, Riot motioned to move two of the five total lawsuits to private arbitration on April 26, citing a clause in Riot's employee contracts that waives rights to legal action and instead moves all complaints to private arbitration.
