Hong Kong announces new commission to address ongoing protests

Chinese University of Hong Kong Police

'I believe Hong Kong people will continue to take to the streets, otherwise the government may mistakenly believe that we have let go of our demands, ' she told AFP.

Hundreds of office workers in Hong Kong's business district gathered on Monday for the first in a week of lunchtime protests backing the pro-democracy movement after its resounding victory in district polls held last week in the Chinese-ruled city.

The gathering in Chater Garden probably drew Hong Kong's best-dressed protesters, and organisers have called on them to come out every day this week.

However, it "sends a signal that US-China tensions will continue to deepen", Raska said.

Pro-democracy protesters raise their hands to symbolize the five demands of the pro-democracy movement during a rally in Hong Kong, Dec. 1, 2019.

Shops and businesses in Tsim Sha Tsui closed early as police sprayed volleys of tear gas at demonstrators, including some elderly residents and others with their pets, as they marched past the city's Kowloon waterfront, home to luxury hotels and shopping malls.

The protest in the busy shopping district of Tsim Sha Tsui followed a "thanksgiving" march by hundreds to the US consulate.

Hong Kong, a major financial hub, had enjoyed relative calm for the past week since local elections last Sunday delivered an overwhelming victory to pro-democracy candidates.

The Kowloon march was cut short after riot police fired tear gas and arrested a few people.

On Saturday, secondary school students and retirees joined forces to protest against what they called police brutality and unlawful arrests.

More tear gas was sacked at night after dozens of hardcore protesters set up roadblocks and vandalised some shops and restaurants linked to China.

Chiefs dominate Raiders, take control of AFC West
Kansas City's defense swarmed Derek Carr , forcing two first-half interceptions - one of which was returned for a touchdown. Oakland was held to just three points until finally scoring its first touchdown of the game with under a minute left.

Hong Kong's protests have been relatively peaceful during the two weeks surrounding the elections, but yesterday's disruption indicated there might be more violence if Lam fails to yield to protesters' demands.

By Sunday night, the crowds of protesters had diminished and some roads reopened to traffic.

Lam has said she'll accelerate dialogue but has refused to offer any new concessions since the elections. "Sometimes their actions are violent and aggressive, but we are more unhappy with the government's behaviour".

The two earlier marches yesterday appealed to US President Donald Trump for help and demanded that police stop using tear gas.

Some donned Trump logo hats and T-shirts as protesters unfurled a banner depicting the USA president standing astride a tank with a U.S. flag behind him.

China suspended USA warship visits and sanctioned American NGOs on Monday in retaliation for the passage of a bill backing pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong.

Hua also announced that Beijing would impose sanctions on several USA non-governmental human rights organizations that have been monitoring and reporting on the protests in Hong Kong.

As Breitbart News reported, some draped themselves in US flags and expressed gratitude for the Trump administration's support.

In the article published earlier yesterday, Bachelet urged authorities in Hong Kong to conduct "a proper independent and impartial judge-led investigation into reports of excessive use of force by the police".

The Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, which the Senate and House passed, puts the special treatment that Hong Kong enjoys under United States law under tighter scrutiny linked to the extent of Hong Kong's autonomy from Beijing.
