The move is a win for advocates who have long complained that Facebook tries to lock user data into its platform.
Embracing the notion of data portability, Facebook has launched a new tool that lets users transfer their photos and videos from Facebook to other online services.
Facebook said that as it worked on a new set of data portability tools, it had discussions with policy-makers, regulators and academics in the U.K., Germany, Brazil and Singapore to learn about which data should be portable and how to protect privacy.
Facebook has launched a new tool which allows you to easily transfer your photos and videos to another service, although it's only available to folks in Ireland initially - although a wider rollout will happen soon enough.
COP25: Pacific countries pushing for climate action in Madrid
The blue zone will also host events and activities run by NGO actors and side events organised by participating countries. World leaders and experts are using COP25 as a venue for promoting multilateralism.
Once it is available, users will find the tool under their Facebook Settings. It's only a matter of time till more companies start adopting this new system so we, as users, don't have to deal with the hassle of manually transferring our own data. Founding members included Google, Facebook, Microsoft, and Twitter.
All data transferred will be encrypted and people will be asked to enter their password before a transfer begins. Actually, that might be underselling it. Facebook says it will be refining the tool "based on feedback from people using it".
Most likely this effort from the Data Transfer Project is born in response to the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
In a blog post announcing the Google Photo tool, which has taken a year to build, Facebook said it had considered security risks. As mentioned, the utility is now only available to those in Ireland, with wider (worldwide) availability planned for the first half of 2020.
