Trump Turning on Pompeo Over Impeachment Push

Democratic congressman Don Beyer of Virginia reacted skeptically to Trump's potential willingness, and also called on the White House to stop blocking the appearance of other officials the intelligence committee panel wants to hear from.

That call prompted a whistleblower complaint to the intelligence community inspector general and, in turn, the impeachment inquiry in the House.

Donald Trump said he will "strongly consider" testifying before Congress in writing as part of the impeachment inquiry into whether he pressured Ukraine to investigate his political rival.

David Holmes told investigators behind closed doors Friday that he overheard the July call in which Trump and Sondland discussed the president's efforts to push Ukraine to investigate Democrats.

During the probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election, the president provided written answers to questions from special counsel Robert Mueller.

Pushing back against accusations from the Republican President that the process has been stacked against him, Ms Pelosi said Mr Trump is welcome to appear or answer questions in writing, if he chooses.

Sondland's testimony suggests he was intimately involved in discussions that are at the heart of the investigation into whether Trump held up US military aid to Ukraine to try to pressure the country's president to announce an investigation into Democrats, including former vice-president Joe Biden, a leading 2020 candidate, and Biden's son Hunter.

Impeachment probe hears of Gordon Sondland’s role on Ukraine
But there will be three days of public hearings in the coming week, featuring some of the biggest names ensnared in the inquiry. Steve Scalise (R-La.), the House minority whip, said on "Fox News Sunday", referring to Ukraine's President Vlodymyr Zelensky.

Trump attacked Williams in a tweet on Sunday.

Mrs. Pelosi also dismissed Republicans' argument that there can not be any quid pro quo if the aid money ultimately flowed and Ukraine never opened investigations.

His comments came after Mr Trump tweeted attacks on a witness - Marie Yovanovitch, the former USA ambassador to Ukraine - while she was testifying to Congress on Friday.

Previous testimony suggests Sondland was involved in conversations key to the investigation into whether Trump held up military aid to Ukraine in exchange for investigations into Joe Biden and his son Hunter. The marathon of hearings will move the House one step closer to its ultimate vote on impeachment.

A poll released Monday confirmed that the country is split more or less down the middle on whether Mr Trump should be removed from office.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi launched the official impeachment inquiry into Trump in September. "President Trump is welcome to take a seat right there". Republicans control the Senate and have shown little support for Trump's removal.
