Girl dies, truck driver missing after French bridge collapse

The remnants of the collapsed Morandi Bridge in Genoa

A teenager has died, several others were seriously injured and a number of other people are feared missing after a bridge collapsed north of Toulouse early on Monday, November 18. Among those feared missing were the truck driver and the driver of a potential third vehicle, he said, adding that witnesses reported seeing a van on the bridge. Officials are yet to confirm the cause of the collapse. The girl's body was pulled from the water, Toulouse prosecutor Dominique Alzeari said at the scene.

The bonnet of the sunken vehicle could be seen sticking out of the water as helicopters circled overhead. Four people, including the victim's mother have been rescued, but emergency services believe they have not accounted for all the victims.

Several vehicles fell into the River Tarn when the structure near the village of Mirepoix-sur-Tarn fell down at around 08:00 (07:00 GMT).

Over 60 emergency workers were at the scene, he said, adding that an investigation would be carried out into the condition of the bridge.

A driver of a truck is unaccounted for as well as a possible driver of a third auto, authorities have said.

Many pedestrians use the bridge, he said, describing its collapse as a "real trauma" for the local population.

Police searched the premises of the drilling company that owned the truck to try to establish whether it was within the 19-tonne load limit allowed on the bridge.
