Trump just overruled his top military officials in controversial war crimes pardons

Trump promoted Edward Gallagher left and pardoned Mathew Golsteyn right

US President Donald Trump has moved to issue at least two pardons to US military service members involved in multiple cases associated with charges of war crimes.

Lieutenant Lorance was jailed for 19 years after he ordered his men to open fire on three men in 2012 in which two people were killed. Trump tweeted, "We train our boys to be killing machines, then prosecute them when they kill!" "Clemency for Major Golsteyn has broad support, including from Representatives Louie Gohmert, Duncan Hunter, Mike Johnson, Ralph Abraham, and Clay Higgins, American author and Marine combat veteran Bing West, and Army combat veteran Pete Hegseth".

Lorance was released from the United States Disciplinary Barracks in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, just before 10:30 p.m. local time Friday.

Golsteyn is awaiting trial for murder while Lorance is now serving a 19-year jail sentence for two murders.

"Our military is the best in the world, and with steadfast and supportive leadership - like we have in this president, our fighting force will only get stronger", Eddie Gallagher added.

Trump also ordered a promotion for Special Warfare Operator 1st Class Edward Gallagher, the Navy SEAL convicted of posing with a dead ISIS captive in Iraq in 2017.

Golsteyn was scheduled for a trial after killing a terrorist bomb-maker after he was released from detention.

In a statement Friday, Golsteyn said his family is "profoundly grateful" for Trump's pardon. "We have lived in constant fear of this runaway prosecution", Golsteyn was quoted saying in the statement. "We would also like to thank the American people for their unwavering support during this very hard time for my family and I - we can never thank you enough".

Other US officials and advocates for the service members involved have said that adopting the president's desires in the military justice system should not be hard. He declined to provide more details, but said, "I do have full confidence in the military justice system and we'll let things play out as they play out".

In May, Trump indicated that he favored leniency towards the service members whose cases were highlighted by conservative media.
