Three children, all under the age of 10, are among five people that were fatally shot Saturday morning, the San Diego Police Department said. Three other boys, their mother, and their father were found inside with apparent gunshot wounds.

The woman, a 31-year-old man and a 3-year-old boy were found dead on the scene, Dobbs said.

An 11-year-old boy was also taken to the hospital to undergo surgery.

The shooting happened just before 7 a.m. on Saturday when officers received a 9-1-1 call from a residence in the 2100 block of Flintridge Drive in Paradise Hills, a neighborhood in the city's southeast. The dispatcher heard arguing in the background, but there was no communication during the 911 call.

Dobbs said the crime scene was so gruesome it traumatized even the arriving officers, who carried the children out of the house in a desperate effort to save them. Police believe the shooter was one of the deceased.

The incident was a "tragic case of domestic violence, murder suicide", said Lt. Matt Dobbs with San Diego's homicide unit.

The names of the victims have not been released.

The estranged wife had obtained a restraining order against the suspected gunman the day before, Dobbs said, although he added that it was still unclear whether it had been served when the shooting occurred.

"There was some kind of argument or disagreement and he used the handgun and shot his family before turning the gun upon himself".

Dobbs said the mother and four children lived in the granny flat adjacent to the main house, where other family members lived.

Soon after, a relative who lived next door called 911 and reported hearing arguing and what sounded like a nail gun being fired.

"They knocked on the front door of the granny flat but they heard no response, so they went over to the back of the granny flat and, through the window, they saw a child down, covered in blood", reporter Rina Nakano said, citing information from San Diego Police.

"A couple weeks ago around November 1, officers responded to the same address over a dispute about property", San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit said in a press conference Saturday afternoon.
