Jake Odorizzi, Jose Abreu accept $17.8M offers to stay with teams

Raj Mehta-USA TODAY Sports

Starting pitcher Jake Odorizzi is reportedly accepting the Minnesota Twins qualifying offer and will rejoin the team for the 2020 season.

According to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, Odorizzi accepted the team's $17.8 million qualifying offer on Thursday. Modern MLB teams have gotten stingy with those draft picks, which is part of the reason Dallas Keuchel and Craig Kimbrel sat on the free-agent market previous year into June. Acquired from the Rays two winters ago for a mid-level shortstop prospect.

Odorizzi, a right-hander who turns 30 in March, was a career-best 15-7 with a 3.51 ERA for the AL Central champions, striking out 178 in 159 innings.

Seven who rejected offers to head into free agency are Astros pitcher Gerrit Cole, Nationals third baseman Anthony Rendon and pitcher Stephen Strasburg, Mets pitcher Zack Wheeler, Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner, Braves third baseman Josh Donaldson and St. Louis outfielder Marcell Ozuna.

Abreu recorded yet another strong season in 2019 with the Chicago White Sox, hitting.284 with 33 home runs and a league-leading 123 RBI. Take the top closer on the market off your free-agent list.

USA 'flexible' on military exercises with South Korea as North demands cancellation
It could also set a precedent for upcoming U.S. negotiations on defense cost-sharing with other allies. Japan imposed export controls on South Korea, citing unspecified security reasons.

A total of 90 players have been issued qualifying offers since the QO system was introduced during the 2012-13 offseason, and Odorizzi and Abreu become the seventh and eighth players to accept the one-year pact.

ATLANTA - The Atlanta Braves have bolstered their shaky bullpen by signing left-hander reliever Will Smith to a three-year, $40 million contract on Thursday.

Now those eight are free to sign with any team they want.

A free agent can be made a qualifying offer only if he has been with the same team continuously since Opening Day and has never received a qualifying offer before.
