Tesla cites Brexit as Germany chosen over United Kingdom for European plant

Tesla Model Y action

USA electric auto firm Tesla will build its European base of operations in Germany, near Berlin, according to company founder Elon Musk who made the long-awaited announcement on Tuesday (12 November).

Musk, in a tweet, said that Tesla will build batteries, powertrains and vehicles, starting with the lower-priced Model Y sports utility vehicle at the Berlin factory.

"Everyone knows German engineering is outstanding for sure". Combined, they generate annual turnover of £82bn and are responsible for 14.4pc of the UK's goods exports: 80pc of the 1.5m cars built in Britain are sold overseas, mostly to Europe.

Germany's big three premium carmakers now have another reason to worry, as Tesla CEO Elon Musk has announced massive investment plans in the land of Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

The Tesla factory is expected to be a boon to Germany, creating thousands of jobs.

Musk made the announcement about the Berlin plant at the Golden Steering Wheel awards ceremony in Germany.

Currently, all of the company's vehicles are built at its factory in California, using batteries produced in Nevada.

China's first plant wholly owned by a foreign carmaker - and Tesla's first outside the US - is a crucial test of Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk's bid to prove his carmaker can sustain profitability as he bets on Chinese EV demand.

In 2014, speaking at the handover of the first right-hand drive Model S cars to British owners, Musk said that the United Kingdom would be the base for a new R&D center, and potentially a factory.

The European plant will be Tesla's fourth battery plant. "We are also going to create an engineering and design centre in Berlin".

Musk also joked that the factory would need to get started more efficiently than the nearby Berlin-Brandenburg Airport has done.

The premier of the state of Brandenburg, which surrounds Berlin, said Tesla was "coming with a big investment".

Its plan to start production in another continent also comes as the auto industry struggles with export restrictions in the form of trade tariffs.

'We lobbied for this for a long time in intensive talks and with good arguments, ' said Dietmar Woidke.
