Raheem Sterling leaps to Gomez' defence after Liverpool star booed for England

2:10 Raheem Sterling and Joe Gomez trained together on Wednesday two days after their altercation at St George's Park

The 24-year-old was made to watch Thursday's match against Montenegro from the stands as punishment, with Harry Kane's hat-trick helping England seal a 7-0 win - their biggest at home since 1987 - and top spot in Group A.

Manchester City's Sterling, who was dropped by England manager Gareth Southgate after an altercation with Gomez in the canteen at the national team's St George's Park training ground on Monday, accepted blame for the incident and said the fans that booed were in the wrong. "It was hard for me to see my team-mate get booed for something that was my fault", Sterling, who had clapped Gomez when he came on, wrote.

"Especially after a hard week for him to be booed when he came on tonight was wrong".

"I've taken full responsibility and accepted the outcome".

"I don't know what more I could've said", he said.

And England boss Gareth Southgate has also leapt to the defence of Gomez and believes no player should ever be booed when playing for their country.

It wouldn't be accurate to say France were at their blistering best for the remaining 81 minutes, but they grew into the game with Raphael Varane's header coming at the ideal moment to level the scores after 35 minutes of play.

'First and foremost the whole dressing room are disappointed with it because they are tight, ' Southgate said.

"He and Raheem are very close, and the whole team are very close".

"It's a shame for them that they're now out of this part of the qualification although they've still got the playoffs in which I think they'll be a huge threat in that format". "The gaffer spoke to me and a few of the other senior players in the team, and that's the decision we came to".

And Southgate was baffled by the supporters' jeers, telling Sky Sports News: "No, I don't understand it".

"If we are to be a team that are going to challenge seriously, although we're young, we've got to manage games well and, although we're such a fantastic attacking threat, we've got to make sure that the rest of the team is right as well. I've already started that, and yes, he's got to feel the support of everybody, which he has, completely".
