A suspected suicide bombing outside a police station in Indonesia has left at least one attacker dead and six other people wounded, authorities said Wednesday.

Gen. Dedi Prasetyo said at least six people were wounded, including four police officers and two civilians, in the attack targeting the police station in North Sumatra province.

Prasetyo said security procedures had been in place for accepting visitors to the police station, but the attacker ignored police when they tried to check his backpack and tried to reach a nearby canteen inside the station complex when his explosive blasted up to 50 metres from the post.

Local television stations broadcast images of people rushing out of buildings around the police headquarters, situated in the northern region of Sumatra.

Police are still investigating whether the 24-year-old university student was linked to a local affiliate of the Islamic State group known as Jemaah Anshorut Daulah, or was a lone wolf radicalised by militants or via the internet.

"Perpetrators and terrorist groups will be chased, captured and brought to justice by our law", Fadjroel Rahman, a spokesman for President Joko Widodo said in a statement, cited by media.

While the motive for today's attack is now unclear, Indonesia - the world's most populous Muslim-majority country - has suffered a resurgence in homegrown militancy in recent years.

The apparent suicide bombing occurred at around 8:45 a.m. on Wednesday, after the morning roll call.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.

National police spokesman Dedi Prasetyo said the blast happened in a auto park near an area where people were queueing for clearance letters from police.

"Six people suffered minor injuries and now being treated at the Bhayangkara Hospital in Medan", Prasetyo said during a press conference in Jakarta.
